The PGS Plumbers Boiler Guide: What is a Regular Boiler?
Regular boilers are also known as Heat Only, Traditional or Conventional boilers and work similarly to System boilers as they also store water in a Hot Water Cylinder. If you live in an older property and the boiler system hasn’t been updated, it is most likely that you have a Regular boiler installed. If you need help checking, contact your local london plumber.
How does a Regular Boiler work?
A Regular boiler heats water stored in a hot water cylinder, which is often kept in an airing cupboard. The water for the hot water cylinder is provided by a cold water storage cistern, which is stored in the loft of the property. The water for the central heating is circulated through the system and a feed and expansion tank – again, located in the loft – keeps the system topped up when water is lost from evaporation. This tank is also used to manage the water when it expands in the system after being heated up.
How can I tell if a Regular Boiler is for me?
If you want instantaneous hot water and already have all the equipment such as the hot water cylinder, feed and expansion tank and water cistern installed, installing a Regular boiler could be an option. New installations of this boiler system are expensive due to the amount of components which need to be installed, but when installed by london registered plumbers it will be able to provide large quantities of hot water. There are down points though, the hot water can often go cold in the water cylinder. Reheating the water is wasting energy and thus a Regular Boiler set up isn’t as efficient as a Combi boiler.
Is it suited to my property?
Regular Boilers are not particularly the best choice for small to medium properties, as Combination boilers are so much cheaper and more efficient. However, when there is a high demand for instantaneous hot water then a Regular boiler could be a good choice. As a lot of larger properties have these boilers already installed, Regular Boilers are in most cases the cheapest option to go for when upgrading or replacing your existing boiler. To summarise, a Regular Boiler is a good choice if you already have the components in place to make it a cheaper installation/upgrade. As one of it’s alternative names suggest, “Conventional” boilers used to be the most common boiler type so it’s often that you will find the necessary tanks in your loft if you live in an older property. There is the also the plus side that if the boiler breaks down, you can use an electric immersion heater to heater the water in the tank. This system isn’t as energy efficient as a combination boiler, and if you’re looking for a brand new installation of this type it would make sense to opt for a System boiler, but it is very reliable and there are a lot of Regular boilers on the market to choose from.
